Abstract

Adolescent mental health is a crucial issue in education, including in Indonesia. Adolescents face various psychological pressures that can potentially impact their well-being, academic, and social development. Schools play a strategic role in supporting adolescent mental health, including through Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) instruction. This study aims to explore the role of physical education instruction on adolescent mental health in Indonesia. The study employed a qualitative approach with an exploratory design based on a literature review. Data sources were derived from relevant national and international scientific articles and involved junior high and senior high school-aged adolescents in Indonesia. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and thematic conclusion drawing. The study results indicate that physical education instruction positively contributes to adolescent mental health, including through reduced stress, improved mood, strengthened self-confidence, and the development of positive social interactions. Furthermore, the quality of physical education instruction and students' physical literacy are linked to adolescent mental health. The study's conclusions confirm that physical education instruction has strategic potential as a promotive and preventive approach to supporting adolescent mental health in the school environment. Therefore, physical education instruction needs to be developed holistically, taking into account the physical, psychological, and social aspects of students.
